MADDOX'S STORY

The Maddox Potter Foundation was created to honor Maddox “Mad Dog” Potter—a beautiful son, devoted big brother, diligent student, and accomplished junior golfer.

Maddox was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia. He began his golf journey at The First Tee of West Virginia at just four years old, and the game quickly captured both his heart and his mind. By age five, he was competing in U.S. Kids Golf tournaments, and as he grew, his passion for the sport expanded through the Callaway Tour, the Under Armour Tour, and his school teams at John Adams Middle School and George Washington High School.

Maddox earned opportunities to play on some of the most renowned courses in the country, including multiple appearances at the Red, White & Blue Invitational in Pinehurst, North Carolina. In the summer of 2023, he qualified for and competed in the Under Armour Junior Nationals at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida—an achievement he was incredibly proud of.

In the fall of 2023, as Maddox began his freshman golf season at his local high school, he developed persistent back pain. What was initially believed to be a sports injury quickly became something unimaginable. After multiple MRI’s, emergency spine surgery, and a transfer to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Maddox was eventually diagnosed with Stage IV Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma—a rare and aggressive pediatric cancer.

Maddox fought bravely for more than a year, enduring multiple chemotherapy protocols, proton therapy, and radiation. As the cancer continued to spread, eventually reaching his brain, Maddox made a final request—that someone, somewhere, would learn something from him.

In December 2024, Maddox made the courageous decision to stop treatment. On December 31st, we honored his wishes and brought our wise, brave, and faithful boy home. Surrounded by family and close friends, he spent his remaining days where he felt safest and most loved. On January 24, 2025, at just 16-years-old, Maddox entered eternal peace.

We miss our boy every day. Through The Maddox Potter Foundation, we are committed to honoring Maddox’s request—by supporting families facing childhood cancer, funding critical research, and connecting the game he loved to hope, purpose, and philanthropy.
